It takes only an instant for a spinal cord
injury (SCI) to happen, but the devastating effects of an
injury can last a lifetime. Over 84% of spinal cord injuries
occur among people who are under the age of 34. Over 60% of
people with spinal cord injuries are unemployed. Healthcare
costs over the lifetime can reach $2.5 million per person,
and that number does not take into account other aspects of
the economy that are influenced by the afflicted
individual’s lack of participation in the workforce, nor the
indirect economic impact upon the 10 million Canadians whose
lives are affected in some way by children, teenagers and
adults living with spinal cord injury. Spinal cord injuries
have a huge economic and personal impact upon society—but
there is hope.
Wheel to Walk Canada is dedicated to funding
breakthrough Canadian research towards a cure for spinal
cord injuries so that people all over the world can rise up
from their wheelchairs and walk again. With your help, that
day may only be five years away. Browse our site. Read about
the exciting research that holds out real hope for
dramatically improving the lives of people suffering not
just from spinal cord injury, but from Alzheimer’s,
Parkinson’s, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, stroke and other
diseases.
